In recent months, EHC and the City Heights community were sad to lose two CAT leaders, both deeply committed to environmental justice. Tranisha Dangerfield and Hser Gay both helped achieve transportation justice victories in City Heights including the completed and planned intersection improvements at Alta Dena and El Cajon. They played big roles in the Recipes for Respect project where cultural food and gatherings were used to honor the importance of diversity in City Heights. You will both be missed. Rest in Power.

On the morning of July 12, a 3-alarm fire broke out aboard the Navy ship USS Bonhomme Richard docked at Naval Station San Diego, located between Barrio Logan and National City. The fire burned for over four days and residents reported suffering from headaches, itchy eyes and nausea. EHC rapidly responded to support residents already disproportionately affected by air pollution.

EHC is dismayed by the corporate subsidies of nearly $4 million that the San Diego Air Pollution Control Board (APCD) provided to industrial polluters! We appreciate the leadership of Assembly member Todd Gloria to request this investigation and thank the California State Auditor’s office for its comprehensive research. The finding validates the experiences of residents who live in the communities most impacted by poor air quality. EHC looks forward to working with the new Air Pollution Control District Board to rectify such problems. Read more.

En meses recientes, EHC y la comunidad de City Heights tristemente sufrieron la pérdida de dos líderes de su Equipo de Acción Comunitaria (CAT), ambas con un enorme compromiso con la justicia ambiental. Tanto Tranisha Dangerfield como Hser Gay apoyaron en lograr triunfos en justicia en el transporte en City Heights, entre ellos las mejoras planeadas y finalizadas en el crucero de las vialidades Alta Dena y El Cajon. Jugaron un papel importante en el proyecto Recetas para el Respeto, en el que se hizo uso de gastronomía y encuentros culturales para rendir homenaje a la importancia de la diversidad en City Heights.
