Environmental Health Coalition has been awarded a three-year, $150,000
per-year grant from California Works for Better Health (CWBH), a joint
initiative of The Rockefeller Foundation and the California Endowment.
Informed by the latest research on employment,
health and regional economic development, the initiative seeks to improve
the health of people who live in very poor California communities by
connecting them to economic opportunities. CWBH is jointly operated by the
two foundations and is headquartered in San Francisco.
EHC was one of four local organizations to selected
for funding by CWBH. The others are San Diego Organizing Project, MAAC
Project, and the United African American Ministerial Action Council. San
Diego is one of four regions in the state selected by CWBH, the others
being Los Angeles, Fresno and Sacramento.
The goal of CWBH is to increase the capacity of
community organizations within each region to improve health by increasing
the rate and quality of jobs. The initiative is working to enhance each
organization’s capacity to link low-income neighborhood residents to
employment and advancement opportunities.
EHC’s focus is to ensure that worker and community
health and safety are an integral part of any job development effort.
"We have always believed that systemic change must be driven by
grassroots organizations, and we greatly appreciate CWBH’s support with
this organization-building grant," said Diane Takvorian, Executive
Director of EHC. "We look forward to working with the other local
grantees."
