Statement by Colectivo
Chilpancingo Pro Justicia Ambiental, June 7, 2002
The Colectivo Chilpancingo Pro Justicia
Ambiental, an affiliate of the Environmental Health Coalition, was formed
in 2000 by a group of people dedicated to environmental justice. We seek
to restore the health of the Colonia Chilpancingo’s environment for the
sake of our children. We have been especially involved in the struggle to
clean up the toxic maquiladora site of Metales y Derivados. This abandoned
lead smelter is only a few meters from our community, and represents a
very serious threat to our health.
The Colectivo serves as a resource for the
community, offering information and education through meetings, forums,
trainings, and materials available to the public. We invite friends,
family and neighbors to get involved and participate in our actions aimed
at bringing about social change for justice.
Promotoras coordinate the two core groups
of the Colectivo, closely monitoring developments in the Metales y
Derivados case, updating members, and organizing other projects. The
promotoras also regularly participate in trainings, and maintain contact
with allied groups and supporters.
Environmental Health Coalition supports us
with information about health, the environment, and environmental justice.
EHC also serves in an advisory and support role when we carry out an
action or protest, inviting the press and other groups to join us in
solidarity.
The Colectivo is dedicated to improving the
living conditions of all residents of the Colonia Chilpancingo. We are a
force for change that seeks to claim our rights to a healthy and clean
environment, safe working conditions, and human dignity. Our doors are
open to those who want to join us in our struggle against injustice caused
by corporate globalization.
